An important and sometimes debated role is given to the surface of grains. The grains are covered with ices, sometimes dubbed ‘dirty water ices’, because of the many impurities. WG2 aims at studying the chemical reactions on grains, in the cold regions of the ISM. Also of interest are the conditions and reactions that occur when the ices sublimate, in more evolved stages of stellar evolution. Many experimental set-ups try and study these mechanisms, focusing often on ad-atom chemistry and build up of larger molecules and COM’s. An important aspect of the WG will be the relevance and reproducibility of the laboratory surface chemistry, and the possible reliable theoretical approaches.
